Tiel is a true entrepreneurial city at heart. As early as the 10th and 11th centuries, it was an important international trading settlement. In the 13th century, Tiel joined the Hanseatic League. By the late 19th century, it had developed into an industrial city, home to well-known companies such as the De Betuwe jam factory and the Daalderop metalworks. Today, the latter operates as Itho-Daalderop and is still based in Tiel’s Medel industrial park.

Situated along the A15 motorway, the Waal River, the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, and a major railway line, Tiel is a key municipality in the Gelderse Corridor.
